My great grandfather, William Chase Whitmarsh was born in Milford, New Hampshire to Elizabeth Ann Wright and William Faxon Whitmarsh January 1, 1855. His parents and other family left Milford about three years later moving to Denmark, Iowa. William Faxon Whitmarsh was born January 27, 1829 in Lyndeborough and died of malaria following the Civil War. He was in the Union Army and part of the occupation troops in Arkansas. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. When my great grandfather was 78 years old he traveled from Arkansas to New Hampshire on his bicycle to visit family with whom he kept in touch. He stayed for six months or so and on his way home, somewhere in Missouri he collapsed and his sons had to bring him home. He died two weeks later. Some day soon I want to visit Milford and see some of the old places he mentioned in the letters my grandmother saved. Great site!

I finally returned to Milford for a visit on July 5, 2004 after leaving in August 1961. As the "oval" came into view years of memories came flooding back of my childhood and early teen years that I lived there. Much has changed, to be sure, but thankfully much is still the same and I was able to find my way around pretty easily. Originally, my father and Grandpa had built a home on Merrimac Street which is still there, tucked back in the woods. Then we lived on Elm Street. Sad to say our neighbors house is now the Dunkin Donuts and our house was where some type of wood store is now. The most amazing thing to me however happened when we visited Haywards Trading Post. There I picked up the "Images of America, Milford" book and just couldn't believe that my second grade class picture was in it. I, of course, had to have the book and have since enjoyed reading through it remembering how Milford used to be. I was especially sorry that the White Elephant Store had burned down many years ago. I went there quite often with my parents. Congratulations on a wonderful book and thanks for the great memories. My parents were Parker and Brenda Pratt and we lived at 75 Elm Street.

Graduated from MHS in 1965. My daughter, Maria Kulianin, is very fond of Milford, where her grandparents (Neil and Olga Kelley) still live. Whenever we are in Milford, we walk the town, and I tell her about living there in the 1950's and 60's. Congratulations on the site; it's really a treat!

Thoroughly enjoyed the discovery of this wonderful website and have added it to my favorites to be visited often. It is helpful for genealogy research I am doing on my Bowler family. Though born in Nashua in 1943, I lived in Milford only as an infant before my parents, George and Inez (Peterson) Bowler, moved to Manchester when my father took a job with the War Department at Grenier Field. Before going to work for the War Department, however, my family were long-time residents of Milford; my father owned and operated Bowler's Esso Service on the town common and was a long-time, active member of the Milford Fire Department. My grandparents, Charles and Sarah (Antill) Bowler, were also long-time residents of Milford; my grandfather owned and operated a granite quary in Milford before his demise in 1928. My husband, Gene Williams, and I now live in Magnolia, Delaware. I would be most grateful to receive any information or memories anyone may have of my family for inclusion in my extensive genealogy research. Regards, Sally (Bowler) Williams

wonderful pics. that brought back some nice memories of an "adventure" my cousin and i had one saturday afternoon in milford in the late 50's. i was 5, he was 12. he was supposed to get his haircut but that never happened. we ended up being locked inside of the white elephant store while all th elocal and state cops were looking for us. after helping ourselves to whatever penny candy we felt like my cousin found a phone and finally called the cops to let them know we had been locked in. what a great place that was!! am also happy to have contributed the pictures i have of the fire at the white horse inn

Great site! Just bought the pictorial history book today and found the website info there. I've lived in Milford since '94 and rented for a short time in a great antique brick home on Amherst St. (used to be the Red Eye Tavern, so I'm told) I loved seeing all the photos of the other old places - too bad so many of them were lost to fire or "progress". Thanks for sharing!
