Nice website. My dad told me about it, but I kept forgetting to look it up. Fond memories of growing up in Milford. Wished my own children could have grown up in Milford, but alas, I was living in Massachusetts at the time. Grew up on North St. and then moved to West St. Was living in Colorado with my family when our house was torn down to make way for the Rite-Aid. I remember the Labor Day parades and then going to the carnival that night.

When I was a kid, before Rt. 101 existed, we had to go through Milford and Manchester on our long trek to Maine. Somewhere between Milford / Manchester, there was a gas station that had a huge doll house next to it, looked like a colonial mansion. Does anyone remember that?

I recently refinished a beat up antique dresser I had bought about 13 years ago for my first apartment as an undergrad in Boston. WOW! the Milford, N. H. web page has changed since I added a message several years ago.
I lived in Milford from 1946 until 1956 and worked in the Public Service Company office on the Oval, lived at 11 Crosby Street, and my sister just added a message to this web page. We both enjoyed the pictures and the memories associated with the scenes.
I noted the name of Marion Blanchard Kopp, one of my dear friends. Nancy Fitch Schooly's father worked at the Public Service Company. Darius Robinson was a high school classmate of my brother, Clyde Lusk.
I wonder if anyone remembers my family.

What a great site to explore and share with people who were born in Milford I me and, people who have moved in over the years. I was born in Milford in 1953 and grew up in a wonderful large Victorian Duplex on 119 Nashua Street with the two loves of my life Rena & Tulio Bianchi my grand parents and countless other cousins in East Milford from Italy and Ireland.
Weekend cookouts with many family neighbors where the norm and a way to listen and learn my heritage and birth right. I learned to play baseball from my dad at a very early age at a baseball field on Nashua Street no more than 300 yds from my home. And baseball, basketball and soccer skills were developed on this same field and in the backyards of my life long grade school and high school I grew up with.
I moved away from Milford in 1975 when I graduated from the University of New Hampshire and for the last 34 years have lived in Massachusetts and enjoyed a multiple business career.
I may have left Milford, but my heart has always remained there and with many people I have had the chance to grow up with that are still living in Milford. I have a great deal of fondness for Milford and getting the opportunity to see historical pictures of this wonderful town and its people with a long history is always worth looking forward to see.
In the future I will scan some of the historical images I have from Milford and will send them in for inclusion on this website.
Thanks, M. Bowen

Thanks for the excellent collection. After living in Milrod from 1956 to 1978 it is fascinating, upon return, to see how many have left and how they have gone so far away. Came back summer of '08 to rededicate my parents'/grandparents' gravesite at Riverside. The town is a jewel which I did not come to appreciate until long after I whipped around the oval on my bike. The Stickney building on the north side is named after my grandparents.

"Hi, great site. i grew up and lived in milford for 15 years, from 1971-1986. my father, Jay Szarka did a lot for the M.C.A.A. down at keyes field, i think was with the mcaa from the start, i used to work at the milford diner, the china star and the white horse inn. was so sad to see the pic of it on fire tonight, that place was a great place. like the site. was online loking for pics of the swinging bridge. our familt used to live at 11 orchard street and i have been over the swinging bridge 2,000 times in the 15 years i lived there. great little city, it's had it's share of problems. i will return someday to live there, i know every street in that town, well, in a radius of 2 miles from downtown. id the drive in theratre still there?? anyone remember going to the wilton theatre to watch all the new movies like ""star wars"" and ""saturday Night fever"" i saw both those movies there in 1976 and i think SNF was like 1979?? anyways, great site, great city, brings back a lot of memories. Was great to find your site of pictures and people from Milford. I am gathering family history material, so this is wonderful to see. All my relatives lived in Milford from the early 1900s -- grandparents on mom's side -- Lucy (Trombly) who worked in mill and Joseph Bisson worked in quarry, my mom Rita, uncle Norman (Nig), aunt Coriene. And on my father's side, grandfather Harry O. (worked for Socony Oil) and Anne D. Buxton -- father Harry R, uncle Arthur, aunts Ruth and May. The pictures seem familiar to me, full of the sights that my parents often spoke about, the swinging bridge they walked to and from school on, the friends like Harold and Dot Gautreau, The McEntees, Don Stimson, and others. The schoolteachers, like Ms French, Mr Parmenter, Ms Butler. Please send info or anecdotes if you or relatives knew my family as i am gathering history. Thank you for great site and news.

My family owned and operated Philbrick's Restaurant on Nashua St. Where everyone knew everyone and were always willing to lend a hand to help others. I had a childhood full of fond memories in a small town , back roads. riding horseback and being a kid. I hold tight to these memories when things get a bit rocky as life sometimes does. Thanks Chris, you are doing a fine job! Would love to hear from others. Blessings, Sandi "

Hi. I was born in Nashua in 1955 and lived in Milford until I was 4 years old. My family lived first on Summer Street and then on Dearborn Street. I was baptized at St. Patrick's Church. My Dad (Charlie Frahme) was the manager of the McClellen's 5c & 10c store for approx. 7 years. My Mom (Dot Frahme)became active in some of St Patrick's church groups. Went back to Milford last week with my family (wife Cathy, sons Cristian,15 and Tyler,11) while celebrating my 50th birthday. Went to Saturday Mass at St. Patrick's. Sat behind a lady named Ann with an awesome singing voice! Spoke with her after Mass. She mentioned a woman at church named Evelyn who may have known my parents-didn't get to speak with her.My parents later told me that the head cashier at McClellen's was named Evelyn. Same one?? If anyone remembers my parents, feel free to e-mail them at: dotnchaz@webtv.net . As I was 4 when we moved away (to NY) I don't remember much. Names that I remember are the Glovers (neighborhood friends) and Dr. Law (he delivered me.) My entire family fell in love with Milford during our short stay. Retiring to Milford someday is not out of the question.

My great grandfather, William Chase Whitmarsh was born in Milford, New Hampshire to Elizabeth Ann Wright and William Faxon Whitmarsh January 1, 1855. His parents and other family left Milford about three years later moving to Denmark, Iowa. William Faxon Whitmarsh was born January 27, 1829 in Lyndeborough and died of malaria following the Civil War. He was in the Union Army and part of the occupation troops in Arkansas. He is buried in the National Cemetery in Little Rock, Arkansas. When my great grandfather was 78 years old he traveled from Arkansas to New Hampshire on his bicycle to visit family with whom he kept in touch. He stayed for six months or so and on his way home, somewhere in Missouri he collapsed and his sons had to bring him home. He died two weeks later. Some day soon I want to visit Milford and see some of the old places he mentioned in the letters my grandmother saved. Great site!

"I finally returned to Milford for a visit on July 5, 2004 after leaving in August 1961. As the ""oval"" came into view years of memories came flooding back of my childhood and early teen years that I lived there. Much has changed, to be sure, but thankfully much is still the same and I was able to find my way around pretty easily. Originally, my father and Grandpa had built a home on Merrimac Street which is still there, tucked back in the woods. Then we lived on Elm Street. Sad to say our neighbors house is now the Dunkin Donuts and our house was where some type of wood store is now. The most amazing thing to me however happened when we visited Haywards Trading Post. There I picked up the ""Images of America, Milford"" book and just couldn't believe that my second grade class picture was in it. I, of course, had to have the book and have since enjoyed reading through it remembering how Milford used to be. I was especially sorry that the White Elephant Store had burned down many years ago. I went there quite often with my parents. Congratulations on a wonderful book and thanks for the great memories. My parents were Parker and Brenda Pratt and we lived at 75 Elm Street. "

Thoroughly enjoyed the discovery of this wonderful website and have added it to my favorites to be visited often. It is helpful for genealogy research I am doing on my Bowler family.
Though born in Nashua in 1943, I lived in Milford only as an infant before my parents, George and Inez (Peterson) Bowler, moved to Manchester when my father took a job with the War Department at Grenier Field. Before going to work for the War Department, however, my family were long-time residents of Milford; my father owned and operated Bowler's Esso Service on the town common and was a long-time, active member of the Milford Fire Department. My grandparents, Charles and Sarah (Antill) Bowler, were also long-time residents of Milford; my grandfather owned and operated a granite quary in Milford before his demise in 1928.
My husband, Gene Williams, and I now live in Magnolia, Delaware. I would be most grateful to receive any information or memories anyone may have of my family for inclusion in my extensive genealogy research.
Regards, Sally (Bowler) Williams

What great pictures! Lived in Milford until 1975 (end of 6th grade) when my family moved to California. Especially loved the class pictures from the 70s- brought back memories of many old friends!

I use to know an Ed Frankavitz in my teens. He was from Wilkes-Barre, PA. We met at Rice Lake.near Gore's Landing, Ontario, Canada. Nice memories. Saw his brother Dave about 6 years ago at the lake. Dave said Ed was in New Hampshire. I just wanted to say HI! Nothing else.except maybe catchup. If this is you.I heard last that you have a happy family. Way to go! Please contact me.just to say hi!.Anne :)

"wonderful pics. that brought back some nice memories of an ""adventure"" my cousin and i had one saturday afternoon in milford in the late 50's. i was 5, he was 12. he was supposed to get his haircut but that never happened. we ended up being locked inside of the white elephant store while all th elocal and state cops were looking for us. after helping ourselves to whatever penny candy we felt like my cousin found a phone and finally called the cops to let them know we had been locked in. what a great place that was!! am also happy to have contributed the pictures i have of the fire at the white horse inn "

"Great site! Just bought the pictorial history book today and found the website info there. I've lived in Milford since '94 and rented for a short time in a great antique brick home on Amherst St. (used to be the Red Eye Tavern, so I'm told) I loved seeing all the photos of the other old places - too bad so many of them were lost to fire or ""progress"". Thanks for sharing!"

Very interesting photos. They brought back many pleasant memories - nostalgia time. I was born in Milford, NH and, during the late 40s and early 50's, attended Milford's Junior and Senior High Schools.
I recognized many of the people in Ed Romney's photos - were we ever so young looking? The photos of gone-by buildings are a real treasure - French & Healds, The White Elephant Shop, The Milford Inn, etc.
It is great that you have created this website. Thanks for your efforts.
I currently reside in Fort Washington, MD - a suburb SE of Washington, DC.

What a great idea. I was born and raised in Milford and have nothing but the most fond memories of Milford. I grew up there in very safe times, in the 50's. I used to walk my baby sister to Jims Store every day after school. I'll never forget the penny candy section. My sister suggested that we put a picture of Lorden Lumber (my father and his brothers company) on line. We still have it. Dave Nichols and I live in the same town of Durham and only recently discovered it. I went to school with him. Thanks for the memories.

"Great site and content. Became aware through the Telegraph article last evening.
Suggestion and my pet peeve: When older photos are shown, it is always even more enjoyable when current ""occupant"" is identified. For example, the Hayward Farm photo. I think it is Agway, but am not postitive.
We've been in area since 1971. I wish I had taken ""before"" and ""after"" photos -- after construction, it is so hard to remember what was there.
Keep up the great work!!"

"Great! Well worth several tries to access photos today; interesting and impressive. Publicity = popularity must have slowed site. We're working (volunteers) on similar project in Hollis: old & new photos, written history, GPS'd sites, maps, documents, & sound files all linked. The time involved: variety of material & getting permissions of all property owners to be in this section of Hollis Town web site means we're not quite up & running yet. Many congrats to you on your site & its growing contribution. Also to Milford on its ""Main Street Award"" & achievements. Isn't it fun finding all these treasures? Relatives of Nevins and Monson may be interested in Sargent Museum's archeological study of 2nd Wm. Nevins homestead, still in Monson but E of Monson Ctr. - part of our survey; our two towns are connected!."

I had many distant relatives who lived in Milford. My great-great-grandfather was Jacob Flynn who was for many years a selectman on the town counsel in the late 1700's and early 1800's. I also have many Hutchinson relatives who lived there. One was Nathan Hutchinson, a very early resident, in fact one of the earliest when the town was Monson. I have been doing a lot of genealogy research in Hillsborough county as there were several families in which I am interested that lived in that county. I am also distantly related to the famous Hutchinson singers.
